Come on, you’ve got to admit, that’s funny! Maybe I find it particularly funny because, as a pastor, I have given that counsel on many an occasion. Of course, anyone who has been married for more than five minutes knows that not going to bed angry is a good idea, and biblical. (Ephesians 4:26) However, applying that biblical counsel is what we struggle with.
Of course, as husbands and wives, we want to do the right thing. We want to have a successful marriage. We want to live, “Happily ever after.” But, let’s face it, we mess up. We get on each other’s nerves. We hurt each other’s feelings. We say the wrong thing. We act the wrong way. We react the wrong way. As I have said for years, two imperfect people living under the same roof is a formula for disaster. There must be a solution.
There is, and it’s not putting on headphones and ignoring our spouse. God’s word gives us the keys to a healthy, loving, rewarding, productive marriage, and it can be summed up in two words – Love & Respect.
Beginning Friday, March 10, 7:00 p.m., and concluding Saturday, March 11, 3:00 p.m., Cross Culture Church is hosting a marriage retreat at the Little River Golf Club, near Pinehurst. We will be using a DVD format conference entitled, Love & Respect: The Love She Most Desires, The Respect He Desperately Needs. It is based on the bestselling book by the same name, authored by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs. He and his wife Sarah have been hosting marriage conferences for years, and you will find the conference both entertaining, and more importantly, informative.
The cost is $100 and covers your room Friday night, lunch on Saturday, snacks, and materials. Of course, one marriage retreat/conference doesn’t mean our marriages will be perfect from then on. But, it will put another tool in your tool-belt for repairs and maintenance for a happier, healthier marriage. Why not make plans to attend with other couples? We’re going to have a lot of fun together, and your marriage can be better as a result of your investment in the weekend. Please contact Cindi Stevens (firstname.lastname@example.org) if you plan to attend.
